Superfoods for a Super You

Açaî

<ə·sī·ē> Born in the rich soil of the Amazon rainforest, açaî berries deliver three times the antioxidants found in blueberries, plus minerals, fiber, and healthy fats, while also containing essentially no sugar. Most places utilize açaî that is sweetened with cane sugar or turbinado, but we keep ours just the way nature intended – au naturel.

Pitaya

<pi·tie·ə> Also known as Dragon Fruit, this immune boosting superfruit is indigenous to Central America. The rich magenta color is full of antioxidants, those cell protective substances which help to prevent damage from free radicals (molecules that can lead to pre-mature aging and cancer). Pitaya is also a good source of Vitamin C, fiber and magnesium. The perfect fruit to start your day, energize before exercising, or refresh after a workout.

Morigna

<məˈrin·gə> Also referred to as the ‘Miracle Tree’, moringa has been used for centuries for its medicinal properties and health benefits. With more than 7 times the vitamin C of oranges, 10 times the vitamin A of carrots, 17 times the calcium of milk, 9 times the protein of yogurt, 15 times the potassium of bananas and 25 times the iron of spinach, you can understand why. The herb has been used for centuries around the world to treat anemia, anxiety, asthma, blood impurities, bronchitis, chest congestion, cholera, and more.

Cacao Nibs

<kə·kou nibz> This delicious superfood is simply pieces of cocoa beans that are fermented, dried and cracked into pieces – think 100% dark chocolate. A great source of iron, these are a great addition to the vegan diet. Not to mention they may provide reduced inflammation, improved focus and alertness, and contain more antioxidant activity than tea, wine, blueberries and even goji berries.

Pea Protein

<pē prow·teen> A unique source of plant based protein that is extracted from yellow peas, is rich in amino acids, and digests easily. Pea Protein has it all – all 9 essential amino acids for healthy skin, bones, and lean muscle mass. It also contains iron, which is critical for energy and mood, and it digests easily to help prevent gastric discomfort, leaving you feeling satiated and in control of your hunger and cravings.

Chia Seeds

<chēə sēd·z> Chia, the Mayan word for strength, and this is one powerhouse superfood, loaded with healthy fats, protein, antioxidants, and dietary fiber. Chia seeds have a mild, nutty flavor, are loaded with protein and fiber, and are ideal for hydration and appetite satiation. Chia seeds also contain eight times more omega-3 fatty acids than salmon and have been clinically shown to be effective in preventing and reversing high cholesterol and heart disease.

Maca Root

<mə·kə ro͞Ot> A pure and potent superfood, Maca has a pleasantly nutty and malty flavor. Resembling a turnip, this super root is known as a prized aphrodisiac and may boost libido in both men and women. It has also been shown to demonstrate reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression, as well as the ability to balance hormones when your body is over or underproducing them.

Hemp Seeds

<hemp sēd·z> Containing all nine essential amino acids, these slightly nutty and light seeds boast a heavy dose of protein along with essential fatty acids necessary to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Hemp seeds are also a great source of vitamin E and minerals, such as phosphorus, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfur, calcium, iron and zinc. In addition, they may help alleviate some symptoms of premenstrual syndrome from the gamma-linolenic acid content.

Bee Pollen

<bē pälən> When bees travel to flowers they collect pollen and pack it into tiny balls known as Bee Pollen. It is a great source of protein (up to 35 percent, including free amino acids), low in fat, and provides a great number of vitamins and minerals. Bee Pollen also offers anti-inflammatory properties, is high in zinc content, and has been shown to boost immunity, achieve mental clarity, and lift energy levels.

Black Currants

<blak kərənt·z> Containing four times the amount of vitamin C as oranges and double the amount of antioxidants, these tart little berries pack a large punch. This vitamin superstar also contains a healthy dose of vitamins A, B1, B5, B6 and E. In addition, Black currants are very high in anthocyanin, which is incredibly supportive of eye health.
